PNR Status Check in India: Train & Flight Guide (2026)

Last reviewed: 5 November 2026. A PNR status check tells you whether an Indian Railways reservation is confirmed, on RAC or waitlisted. For flights, PNR usually means the airline booking reference used to retrieve your reservation. The two systems are different, so use the right official service before you travel.

This guide explains how to check a train PNR online or by phone, where to find the number, how to read common status codes, what a waitlisted e-ticket means after chart preparation, and how to retrieve an airline booking. It focuses on practical steps for travellers in India and links to official railway and airline sources.

For broader route, budget and regional planning, see our India Travel Guide 2026.

What is a PNR number?

PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. Indian Railways assigns a unique 10-digit PNR to a reserved train booking. It connects the journey details with the passenger or passengers listed on that reservation. One train PNR can cover more than one traveller, and each passenger can have a different reservation status.

Airlines also use the term PNR for a booking reference. That reference is commonly a short alphanumeric code, but the format and the details required to retrieve it depend on the airline. Do not enter a six-character flight reference into the Indian Railways enquiry form, or a 10-digit train PNR into an airline booking form.

How to find your train PNR number

If you booked a train ticket and need a PNR status check, first locate the number. You can usually find it in one of these places:

  • Printed railway ticket: look near the top of the reservation ticket, where the PNR is printed separately from the train number and transaction details.
  • IRCTC confirmation message: open the booking confirmation SMS sent after a successful e-ticket booking.
  • IRCTC email: search your inbox for the ticket confirmation or electronic reservation slip.
  • IRCTC account: sign in to the official website or app and open your booked-ticket history or booking details.
  • Authorised booking agent: check the final ticket or confirmation document supplied by the agent. Use the railway PNR shown on the ticket, not an agency order number.

Keep the complete 10 digits together. A missing digit or a transposed pair can return an invalid result or, in rare cases, make you look at a different booking.

PNR status check online: step-by-step for Indian Railways

  1. Open the official Indian Railways enquiry page. Use the Indian Railways Passenger Reservation Enquiry page. Save the official address in your browser rather than following an unknown advertisement or message link.
  2. Enter the 10-digit PNR. Type the number from your ticket carefully. Complete the security check or captcha if the page displays one.
  3. Submit the enquiry. The result can show train number and name, date of journey, from and to stations, class, boarding point, passenger-wise booking status and current status.
  4. Read the current status for every passenger. Do not look only at the first passenger row when several people share one PNR. Coach and berth details may be shown once they are allotted.
  5. Check the charting information and refresh closer to departure. Indian Railways notes that the current status may change if the final reservation chart has not yet been prepared. A result viewed earlier is not a guarantee of the final status.

The official enquiry page is the best starting point when you need the railway’s current record. If it is temporarily unavailable, wait a little and retry, or use the official 139 enquiry service. Avoid repeatedly entering the PNR on unrelated websites that ask for unnecessary personal information.

Other official ways to check train PNR status

Use railway enquiry number 139

Indian Railways and IRCTC publish 139 as the integrated railway enquiry service, which includes PNR enquiry. You can call 139 and follow the voice prompts for reservation or PNR information. This is useful when mobile data is weak, the official page is not loading or you need spoken assistance.

Railway information material also describes an SMS enquiry format: type PNR, add a space and your 10-digit number, then send it to 139 (for example, PNR 1234567890). SMS availability and charges can depend on the service and your mobile operator. Check the current instructions before sending. See the IRCTC 139 railway enquiry information and the Indian Railways passenger amenities handbook.

Use the official IRCTC account or app

If you booked while signed in to IRCTC, open your booked-ticket history and select the journey. This helps when you have several trips and do not want to search through old messages. Make sure the app or website is the genuine official IRCTC service. Never share your account password, OTP or payment PIN with someone offering to check a PNR for you.

How to read Indian Railways PNR status codes

The enquiry result may show both the booking status and the current status. Booking status records the position when the ticket was issued. Current status reflects the latest reservation position available when you check. The two can be different because cancellations, quota movement and chart preparation can change availability.

Code Meaning What it tells you
CNF Confirmed A confirmed reservation. Coach and berth details may appear after chart preparation.
RAC Reservation Against Cancellation You have a reservation entitlement, but the berth arrangement may be shared or otherwise limited until allocation changes.
WL Waiting List A berth is not confirmed yet. The number after WL indicates the waitlist position shown by the system.
GNWL General Wait List A waitlist category used for general quota bookings.
RLWL Remote Location Wait List A waitlist category associated with a remote-location quota.
PQWL Pooled Quota Wait List A waitlist category associated with a pooled quota.
TQWL Tatkal Quota Wait List A waitlist category associated with Tatkal bookings.
CAN / MOD Cancelled or modified passenger The passenger entry has been cancelled or modified.
RELEASED Alternative accommodation provided The railway record indicates that alternative accommodation has been provided.
TDR Ticket Deposit Receipt A TDR has been filed for the ticket; this is not itself a confirmation of refund approval.

These abbreviations are not a prediction of whether a waitlisted ticket will clear. The official Indian Railways PNR enquiry page lists the status legends and warns that prediction information is indicative and can differ from the eventual result. Treat the current reservation record and final chart as more important than a third-party probability estimate.

What happens if your train ticket is RAC or waitlisted?

If the status is RAC

RAC means Reservation Against Cancellation. It is not the same as a fully waitlisted ticket. Check the current passenger row and any coach or seat information shown. The final berth arrangement can depend on railway allocation and later cancellations. Keep checking the official record rather than assuming that an RAC status will automatically become a full berth.

If the status is WL before chart preparation

A waitlisted booking has not yet become a confirmed berth. It may move as availability changes, but no website or prediction tool can guarantee confirmation. If the journey is important, make a practical backup plan and review the applicable cancellation conditions before deciding whether to keep or cancel the booking.

If an e-ticket is still fully waitlisted after chart preparation

IRCTC’s published scheme says that when every passenger on an e-ticket remains waitlisted after chart preparation, those names are dropped from the chart and the passengers are not allowed to board. IRCTC arranges the applicable refund under the railway rules. Do not travel on the assumption that a fully waitlisted e-ticket is valid after charting.

IRCTC separately explains that a booking with a mixture of confirmed, RAC and waitlisted passengers is treated differently: the names can appear in the chart, including the waitlisted passengers. Read the exact passenger-wise result and the current official rule before travelling. For the formal wording, see IRCTC’s scheme for waitlisted e-tickets.

Train PNR example: why every passenger row matters

Imagine a family of three booked under one PNR. At the time of booking, the first passenger is confirmed, the second is RAC and the third is waitlisted. A later enquiry may show a different current status for one or more passengers. The PNR is still one booking reference, but it does not mean all three people have the same seat entitlement.

Before leaving for the station, open the result again and read all passenger rows. Check the final chart information and the ticket type. If the result is unclear, contact railway enquiry or IRCTC support rather than relying on a prediction screenshot shared in a chat group.

How to check a flight PNR or airline booking reference

For a flight, use the airline’s own Manage Booking or Flight Status page. The code may be called a PNR, booking reference or reservation code. It is usually different from an Indian Railways 10-digit PNR.

  1. Find the airline reference. Look in the airline confirmation email, e-ticket or the booking details supplied by your travel agent. If you booked through an online travel agency, distinguish the agency’s order ID from the airline’s booking reference.
  2. Open the operating airline’s official website or app. Choose Manage Booking, My Trips or Flight Status, depending on what you need.
  3. Enter the reference and the requested passenger detail. Airlines commonly ask for the passenger’s last name or the email address used at booking. Match the spelling to the ticket.
  4. Review the itinerary and flight status separately. A booking can exist even if the flight time changes. For departure or arrival updates, use the airline’s flight-status tool and the travel date.

For example, Air India’s Manage Booking page asks for the booking reference number (PNR) and last name. Air India describes its reference as a six-character PNR in its booking help. IndiGo’s flight-status tracker asks for travel details such as the date and PNR or booking reference. Always use the current instructions displayed by your own airline.

If you need the next step after retrieving a flight booking, read our web check-in guide for flights in India. It explains why a PNR or confirmed ticket is not the same as a completed check-in or boarding pass.

Common PNR status check problems and practical fixes

  • “Invalid PNR”: count the digits again, remove spaces and make sure you are using the train PNR rather than the train number, transaction ID or agency reference.
  • “No record found”: confirm that the booking was completed and a PNR was generated. If payment was pending or the booking failed, check the booking history and payment message before trying again.
  • The status has not changed: refresh the official page after a reasonable interval. The system may not show a new allocation immediately, and the final chart may not yet be prepared.
  • Different sites show different results: use the official Indian Railways enquiry for the authoritative current record. Third-party sites may refresh at different times or display predictions separately from the railway status.
  • Flight booking is not found: check whether the airline requires the last name, email address or a different airline-issued reference. A travel-agent invoice number may not retrieve the reservation.
  • The official service is unavailable: retry later or use 139 for railway enquiry. For a flight, contact the operating airline using the support details on its official website or booking confirmation.

Protect your PNR and booking details

A PNR can reveal useful journey information, so avoid posting a complete ticket or PNR publicly. Do not upload a ticket screenshot to an unknown “PNR checker” or give an OTP to anyone claiming to be railway or airline support. Use official websites, official apps and verified customer-support channels for status checks, cancellations, changes and refunds.

Quick checklist before you travel

  • Keep the correct train PNR or airline booking reference saved offline.
  • For trains, use the 10-digit PNR on the official Indian Railways enquiry page.
  • Read the current status for each passenger, not just the first row.
  • Check again after chart preparation and before leaving for the station.
  • Do not board on a fully waitlisted e-ticket that remains fully waitlisted after chart preparation.
  • For flights, retrieve the booking through the operating airline and check flight status separately.
  • Keep your original required identity documents with you and protect your booking details.

Frequently asked questions about PNR status check

1. How many digits are there in an Indian Railways PNR?

An Indian Railways train PNR is a unique 10-digit number. It is printed on the ticket and included in the booking confirmation. Airline booking references use a different format.

2. Can I check train PNR status without logging in to IRCTC?

Yes. You can use the public Indian Railways PNR Enquiry page with the 10-digit number. Railway enquiry 139 is another official route for PNR information. You do not need to share your IRCTC password with a third-party checker.

3. What is the difference between booking status and current status?

Booking status is the reservation position when the ticket was issued. Current status is the latest position shown by the enquiry system. The current status can change before the final chart is prepared.

4. Can I travel if my e-ticket is fully waitlisted after chart preparation?

No. IRCTC states that when all passengers on an e-ticket remain waitlisted after chart preparation, their names are dropped from the chart and they are not allowed to board. The applicable refund is arranged under railway rules.

5. Is RAC the same as a waitlisted ticket?

No. RAC means Reservation Against Cancellation and is different from WL. Check the current coach and seat information shown for your passenger. Do not assume that RAC guarantees a full berth.

6. How do I check a flight PNR status?

Open the operating airline’s official Manage Booking or Flight Status page. Enter the airline booking reference and the passenger detail requested, such as the last name or email. Use the flight-status page and travel date to check delay or departure information.
