A Journey That Stayed With Me Forever
Some journeys end when you return home. Others stay with you forever. This Kashmir road trip became one of those unforgettable experiences.
For years I had admired Kashmir through photographs, documentaries and travel videos. Every picture showed snow-covered mountains, peaceful lakes and endless green valleys. But I always believed that no photograph could truly capture what it feels like to stand there in person.
Finally, in June 2026, three friends, one Ford EcoSport and a week-long plan turned that dream into reality. Instead of taking a direct flight to Srinagar, we decided to drive all the way from Delhi, experiencing every changing landscape—from wide national highways to the winding mountain roads leading into the Kashmir Valley.
Looking back today, choosing a self-drive road trip was the best decision we made. Every kilometre added something new to the journey, making the destination even more rewarding.
Why We Chose A Road Trip
Flying would have been faster, but driving allowed us to experience the changing landscapes, mountain highways, local villages and unforgettable roadside moments that most travellers never get to see.
Delhi to Srinagar – The Journey Begins
17–18 June 2026
Our Kashmir adventure began around 5:00 PM as we left Delhi in our Ford EcoSport. With luggage packed, music playing and excitement at its peak, we finally started the road trip we had been planning for months.
Instead of flying directly to Srinagar, we chose the self-drive route because we wanted to experience every part of the journey. We travelled overnight via NH-44, passing through Ludhiana, Pathankot and Jammu before entering the Kashmir Valley.
Driving through the night had its own charm. Traffic was light, highways were smooth and every passing kilometre brought us closer to the mountains. As dawn arrived, the scenery slowly changed from plains to rolling hills and finally into the breathtaking landscapes of Kashmir.
We reached Srinagar next evening at 6 PM. After thousands of kilometres on the road, the first glimpse of Dal Lake instantly erased every bit of tiredness. The peaceful atmosphere, cool breeze and surrounding mountains made us realise that the journey had been absolutely worth it.
Our first stay in Kashmir was something we had always wanted to experience—a traditional houseboat on Dal Lake. Since it was my first time staying in a houseboat, I was genuinely excited to see what it would be like.

My First Stay In A Traditional Kashmir Houseboat
After reaching Srinagar, we checked into Young Hollywood Houseboat on Dal Lake. It was my first experience staying in a traditional Kashmiri houseboat, and I was genuinely excited to see what it would be like.
The houseboat was beautifully maintained with traditional wooden interiors, comfortable rooms and a peaceful atmosphere. Since the houseboats are located inside Dal Lake, every guest reaches them by Shikara from the nearest gate.
The owner and staff welcomed us warmly and treated us like family throughout our stay. Their hospitality made our very first day in Kashmir even more memorable.
After freshening up, we relaxed for some time while enjoying the beautiful lake views before getting ready for our first Shikara ride in the evening.

Exploring Dal Lake On A Traditional Shikara Ride
After relaxing for a while inside our houseboat, we got ready for one of the most awaited experiences of our Kashmir trip—a peaceful Shikara ride on the famous Dal Lake.
Houseboats are located in the middle of Dal Lake, so every guest travels by Shikara from the lake gate to the houseboat. As soon as our Shikara started moving, the calm water, cool breeze and surrounding mountains created an unforgettable atmosphere.
During our one-hour ride, we explored the floating Meena Bazaar, famous shooting points and watched the beautiful evening lights reflecting on the lake. The entire experience felt peaceful and completely different from anything we had experienced before.
One of the most unique things about Dal Lake is its floating vendors. Small wooden boats come directly to your Shikara selling saffron, handicrafts, dry fruits, jewellery, flowers, Kashmiri souvenirs and even hot drinks.
I also tried authentic Kashmiri Kahwa and freshly brewed coffee while floating on the lake. Sitting in the middle of Dal Lake with a cup of traditional Kahwa was undoubtedly one of the best moments of our entire Kashmir trip.

Chashme Shahi – Kashmir's Famous Mughal Garden
The next morning, after breakfast, our first destination was Chashme Shahi, one of the most beautiful Mughal Gardens in Srinagar. Located on the Zabarwan Hills, this historic garden offers breathtaking views of Dal Lake and the surrounding mountains.
Built in 1632 by Ali Mardan Khan under the orders of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, Chashme Shahi is famous for its natural spring. The crystal-clear mountain water flowing through the garden is incredibly cold and is believed to have medicinal properties.
The beautifully maintained gardens, colourful flowers, ancient trees and peaceful atmosphere make this one of the best places to begin your Srinagar sightseeing.
Before entering the garden, all vehicles pass through a security checkpoint where luggage is scanned. Parking was completely free during our visit, while the entry ticket cost ₹50 per person.

Pari Mahal – The Palace Of Fairies
After exploring Chashme Shahi, our next stop was Pari Mahal, located just a few kilometres away. As we reached the entrance, light rain had started and thick clouds covered the surrounding mountains, making the weather even more beautiful.
Perched high on the Zabarwan Range, Pari Mahal is a historic seven-terraced Mughal garden overlooking the famous Dal Lake. Built in the 17th century by Dara Shikoh, the eldest son of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, the monument served as an observatory and a centre for learning.
From the top, we enjoyed one of the finest panoramic views of Srinagar, Dal Lake and the surrounding valleys. During June, the entire landscape was covered in lush greenery, making it one of the most scenic viewpoints of our Kashmir trip.
The garden was clean, peaceful and beautifully maintained. Just like Chashme Shahi, parking was free and the entry ticket cost ₹50 per person.

Nishat Bagh – The Garden Of Joy
Our next destination was the famous Nishat Bagh, located along the eastern banks of Dal Lake. This Mughal Garden immediately impressed us with its vast green lawns, colourful flower beds and breathtaking views of Dal Lake backed by the Zabarwan Mountains.
Built in 1633 by Asif Khan, the elder brother of Empress Nur Jahan, Nishat Bagh is the largest Mughal Garden in Kashmir. The garden is spread across twelve beautifully designed terraces, symbolising the twelve zodiac signs.
Walking through the gardens was incredibly peaceful. Crystal-clear water channels, fountains, centuries-old Chinar trees and colourful seasonal flowers made every corner feel picture perfect. The garden was exceptionally clean and beautifully maintained.
From the upper terraces, we enjoyed spectacular panoramic views of Dal Lake, making it one of the best photography spots during our Srinagar sightseeing.

Gulmarg – Endless Green Meadows & Snow-Capped Mountains
After spending two unforgettable days exploring Srinagar, we continued our Kashmir road trip towards the beautiful hill station of Gulmarg. To avoid daytime traffic, we travelled during the night and reached Chinar Wood Resort around midnight. After checking in and enjoying a peaceful night's rest, we woke up early, had breakfast and prepared to explore one of Kashmir's most famous tourist destinations.
The drive to Gulmarg itself was incredibly scenic. As we left Srinagar behind, the landscape slowly transformed into rolling green valleys, dense pine forests and distant snow-covered Himalayan peaks. The cool mountain air and peaceful surroundings immediately made Gulmarg feel different from anywhere else we had visited during the trip.
🌿 Arrival at Gulmarg
After parking our Ford EcoSport near the main tourist area, we started exploring Gulmarg on foot. The weather was cool, the skies were clear and the fresh mountain breeze made the entire atmosphere incredibly refreshing. Since we had arrived early in the morning, the crowds were still manageable, allowing us to enjoy the peaceful surroundings without any rush.
The first thing that caught our attention was the endless stretch of lush green meadows surrounded by towering Himalayan mountains. Horses grazed peacefully across the open fields while visitors walked through the landscape, enjoying the breathtaking natural beauty from every direction.
🌼 Exploring the Green Meadows
Gulmarg is often called the "Meadow of Flowers," and after spending only a few minutes there, it became easy to understand why. Vast grasslands stretched across the valley while colourful wildflowers added even more beauty during the summer season. Every viewpoint looked like a perfect postcard.
Instead of rushing from one sightseeing location to another, we simply spent time walking through the meadows, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and capturing photographs from different angles. The combination of green landscapes, wooden cottages and snow-covered mountain peaks created one of the most memorable scenes of our entire Kashmir journey.
Photography lovers will find countless opportunities throughout Gulmarg. Every turn offers a different perspective, whether it's panoramic mountain views, beautiful walking trails, grazing horses or charming local wooden houses surrounded by nature.
🚠 Gulmarg Gondola
One of the biggest attractions in Gulmarg is the famous Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable car systems in the world. Unfortunately, during our visit the Gondola remained closed due to scheduled maintenance. Although we couldn't experience the cable car ride, the natural beauty of Gulmarg itself ensured that the trip remained unforgettable.
Visitors planning a trip to Gulmarg should always check the Gondola's operational status before travelling, especially during maintenance periods or adverse weather conditions. When operational, the Gondola takes visitors to higher elevations where breathtaking panoramic views, snow activities and skiing can be enjoyed.
🚶 Walking Through Gulmarg
Since the Gondola was unavailable and we preferred exploring independently, we skipped the pony rides and spent several hours walking through Gulmarg's open meadows. This turned out to be one of the best decisions of the entire trip. Walking allowed us to appreciate the peaceful atmosphere, observe the changing mountain scenery and enjoy the fresh alpine air at our own pace.
The combination of lush green landscapes, tall pine trees and majestic Himalayan peaks created an unforgettable experience. Every few minutes we stopped to admire the scenery, capture photographs and simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Gulmarg is truly a paradise for photographers. Whether you're using a DSLR, drone or simply a mobile phone, every direction offers spectacular compositions. The colourful meadows, grazing horses, pine forests and snow-covered mountains create endless opportunities for landscape and travel photography.
Morning remains the best time to visit because the lighting is softer, temperatures are pleasant and tourist crowds are comparatively smaller. Spending extra time simply enjoying the scenery became one of the highlights of our Kashmir road trip.

Sonamarg – The Meadow of Gold & Gateway to Zojila Pass
After spending an unforgettable day in Gulmarg, we decided to continue our journey during the night to avoid daytime traffic. The drive was peaceful, and we reached Sonamarg around 1:00 AM, where we checked into Hotel Snowbar for the night.
The next morning started with a refreshing breakfast before we headed towards Sonamarg's beautiful mountain landscapes. Since the Amarnath Yatra preparations had already begun, security checks were visible throughout the route, making the area feel extremely safe and well managed.
🌊 Sindh River
Driving alongside the Sindh River was one of the highlights of the day. Crystal-clear water flowed beside the road while snow-covered mountains stood proudly in the distance. Every few kilometres we found ourselves stopping just to admire the scenery and capture photographs.
Our first major stop was the famous Fish Point, where many tourists gather to enjoy the river views, local food stalls and photography. The atmosphere was lively, with travellers, bikers and families enjoying the fresh mountain air.
🏔 Zojila Pass & Zero Point
From there, we continued our drive towards the famous Zojila Pass Zero Point. The road gradually climbed higher into the mountains, offering dramatic landscapes unlike anywhere else in Kashmir. Although the weather kept changing, the drive itself became one of the most memorable experiences of the trip.
Because of the heavy Amarnath Yatra traffic, we skipped Baltal and continued enjoying the surrounding viewpoints before returning to Sonamarg later in the day.
❄️ Thajiwas Glacier
Before concluding our Sonamarg adventure, we visited the famous Thajiwas Glacier, one of the region's most popular attractions. Surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks, flowing mountain streams and breathtaking alpine scenery, the glacier offers visitors a chance to experience snow even during the summer months. The peaceful atmosphere and spectacular landscape make it a must-visit destination for anyone travelling to Sonamarg.
Visitors can either trek to the glacier or hire a pony from the designated riding area, depending on the season and personal preference. During our visit, the fresh mountain air, crystal-clear streams and snow-covered surroundings created one of the most memorable moments of the entire Kashmir road trip. After spending quality time exploring the glacier and capturing countless photographs, we returned to Sonamarg with unforgettable memories of one of Kashmir's most beautiful natural attractions.

Pahalgam – Valleys, Rivers & Endless Green Landscapes
After leaving Sonamarg, we started our journey towards Pahalgam. The drive itself was incredibly scenic, with beautiful mountain roads, flowing rivers and lush green landscapes accompanying us almost the entire way.
The route from Srinagar towards Pahalgam passes through some of the most picturesque areas of Kashmir. As we drove along the Lidder River, every turn offered another postcard-worthy view. We crossed several small towns before finally reaching Pahalgam in the evening.
Our stay was booked at Premier Pahalgam, a comfortable hotel located close to the main market. After checking in, we spent the evening exploring the local market, where we purchased authentic Kashmiri shawls, dry fruits and a few souvenirs before enjoying dinner.
Betaab Valley – One of Kashmir's Most Beautiful Valleys
The following morning, we left early to explore the famous valleys around Pahalgam. Our first destination was the beautiful Betaab Valley, known for its crystal-clear river, wide green meadows and breathtaking mountain backdrop. The valley was crowded but absolutely worth visiting.

After spending the entire day exploring Pahalgam, we began our return journey towards Delhi with unforgettable memories, thousands of photographs and experiences that will stay with us forever. Kashmir had exceeded every expectation and proved why it is truly called Paradise on Earth.
Returning Home With Memories That Will Last Forever
After spending unforgettable days in Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam, it was finally time to begin our drive back to Delhi. Although the trip was coming to an end, every kilometre of the return journey reminded us why Kashmir is called Paradise on Earth.
The drive back followed the same beautiful highway through Jammu and Punjab. This time, however, we weren't just travellers passing through—we were taking home countless memories, thousands of photographs and experiences that would stay with us forever.
From spending a peaceful night on a traditional houseboat and enjoying a Shikara ride on Dal Lake to exploring the Mughal Gardens of Srinagar, walking through the endless green meadows of Gulmarg, driving to Sonamarg and Zojila Pass, and discovering the breathtaking valleys of Pahalgam, every single destination offered something unique.
The hospitality of the Kashmiri people was another unforgettable part of our journey. Everywhere we went, we were welcomed with kindness, respect and genuine warmth. Those interactions made this road trip even more special.
