Agra & Fatehpur Sikri Trip – My Travel Story (19 September 2021)

Midnight Road Trip from Delhi

On 19th September 2021, I started my journey from Delhi at midnight, heading towards Agra via the famous Yamuna Expressway. The total distance of around 230 km took me approximately 4 hours. The expressway is one of the best highways I’ve ever experienced—it’s a smooth 6-lane road, well-maintained, and perfect for long drives.

A smooth and peaceful journey

There are multiple toll plazas along the route, and for a car, the toll cost is approximately ₹400–₹500 one way. You’ll also find plenty of fuel stations, rest stops, and food outlets, making the journey comfortable. Driving early in the morning with almost no traffic made the experience peaceful and enjoyable.

Stay in Agra

I reached Agra around 5–6 AM and checked into Dau Home Stay, which is located near the Taj Mahal entry area. The stay cost me around ₹1200 per night with breakfast included. After taking some rest, I woke up around 10–11 AM, got fresh, and started exploring the city.

Exploring the Taj Mahal

My first destination was the iconic Taj Mahal. There are three main gates—East, West, and South Gate—and since vehicles are not allowed close to the monument, parking is available 1–2 km away. From there, I took a shared electric rickshaw for ₹10–₹20.

The entry ticket for Indian adults is ₹50, and if you want to visit inside the main mausoleum (tomb area), you need to pay an additional ₹250.

As soon as I entered, the first view of the Taj Mahal was breathtaking. The white marble monument, surrounded by lush green gardens, looked absolutely stunning. The main gate offers a perfect frame for photography, and there is also a popular “celebrity photo point” where visitors capture their best shots.

Built by Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj Mahal is a symbol of eternal love. The peaceful flow of the Yamuna River behind the monument adds to its charm. One interesting feature is the fountain system in the garden, which works without electricity using a gravity-based mechanism—showcasing the brilliance of Mughal engineering.

Agra Fort – A Glimpse of Mughal Royalty

After lunch at a local restaurant, I visited the historic Agra Fort, which is spread across nearly 94 acres. The entry ticket is around ₹50 for Indian visitors.

The fort reflects the grandeur of the Mughal era and offers deep insight into royal life. I explored Jahangir’s bathtub, which is believed to have been used during his childhood, and saw the advanced cooling system where water flowed behind the walls to maintain a comfortable temperature. It is said that many parts of the fort were once decorated with gold and precious stones, later taken away during British rule.

The Meena Bazaar inside the fort was designed for royal women, as they were not allowed to go outside. Merchants would come here to sell their goods. I also visited the Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience) and Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), which highlight the administrative system of the Mughal empire.

By evening, I returned to my stay, had dinner at a local restaurant, and rested.

Journey to Fatehpur Sikri

The next morning, after breakfast, I checked out and headed towards Fatehpur Sikri, located about 36–40 km from Agra. It took me around an hour to reach, and I arrived around 11 AM.

The entry ticket here is approximately ₹50. To better understand the history, I hired a guide for ₹700, which made the visit much more informative.
