In November 2023, I finally planned my long-awaited road trip to the Golden City – Jaisalmer. And trust me, this journey turned out to be one of the most memorable travel experiences of my life.
Here’s my complete travel story, route, budget, and desert safari experience.
Starting the Journey – Delhi to Jaisalmer by Road
We started our journey from Delhi on 23rd November 2023 around 11 PM by car. Night road trips have their own vibe – less traffic, smooth highways, and that excitement of reaching the desert city.
Route We Followed:
Delhi → Gurugram → Neemrana → Behror → Kotputli → Jaipur → Ajmer → Beawar → Pali → Jodhpur → Pokhran → Jaisalmer
The roads were mostly smooth highways, especially till Jaipur and Jodhpur. After Jodhpur, the scenery slowly started changing — less greenery and more open desert landscapes.
Windmills & First Glimpse of the Desert
Around 50–60 km before reaching Jaisalmer, the view completely changed.
We started seeing:
- Sand patches near the highway
- ATV ride boards
- Jeep safari advertisements
- Desert camps signage
- Huge wind parks with massive windmill turbines rotating slowly
The windmills looked huge and beautiful against the desert sky. It was our first real feel of Rajasthan’s desert energy zone.
That moment felt like — Yes, we are finally close to the Golden City.
Arrival at Sam Sand Dunes – 24th Nov 2023, 3 at PM
Instead of going to the city first, we directly reached Sam Sand Dunes at around 3 PM on 24th November 2023.
And honestly… I was shocked 😍
Everywhere I looked — there was sand. Endless golden sand. Dozens of desert camps and resorts lined up in the area.
We first stopped at a restaurant, had lunch, relaxed for some time, and started searching for desert camp bookings.
Important Tip – Online vs Manual Booking Price Difference
We checked online prices for 2 camps — it was showing around ₹4,800.
But when we contacted a local resort person directly, we got the same camp for just ₹2,700 😮
That’s almost half price!
👉 Lesson learned:
Always compare:
- Online booking platforms
- Direct local booking
- Travel agents
Sometimes manual booking or booking through a trusted travel agency gives much better rates.
Desert Camp Stay Experience
After check-in, we took some rest in our Swiss tent camp. The tents were well maintained with proper beds, attached washroom, and basic facilities.

The funniest part?
The local camel handlers — even small kids — had named the camels after Bollywood celebrities like:

It was full of fun and laughter.
We personally enjoyed:
- Jeep desert safari ride on sand dunes
- Camel ride during sunset
- Shooting videos and clicking lots of pictures
- Running on soft sand
The sunset view over the dunes was magical — golden sky + golden sand = unforgettable memory.
Rajasthani Buffet Dinner & Cultural Night
After desert activities, we returned to our resort via jeep.
At night, they arranged a Rajasthani buffet dinner with multiple traditional dishes like:
- Dal Baati Churma
- Gatte ki Sabzi
- Ker Sangri
- Bajra Roti
- Papad & Chutneys
- Sweet dishes like Gulab Jamun
The food was authentic and full of traditional flavors.
Cultural Program & Bonfire Night
The resort had a large open cultural area with sofas and chairs arranged around the stage.
We enjoyed:
- Live Rajasthani folk dance
- Traditional music performances
- Kalbeliya dance
- DJ music
- Bonfire under the open sky
The atmosphere was energetic and festive. Sitting under the desert sky, enjoying music and bonfire — it felt peaceful yet exciting at the same time.
After the program, we went back to our camp and slept comfortably in the desert.
Final Thoughts – Was It Worth It?
Absolutely YES.
The road trip, desert safari, camel ride, cultural program, and budget-saving tip — everything made this trip special.

Day 2 – Longewala War Memorial & Tanot Border Experience
The next morning at our desert camp near Sam Sand Dunes started with fresh desert air and peaceful surroundings.
Morning at the Camp
The camp was well-maintained and comfortable. It had:
- Proper fan
- Attached washroom
- Electricity board for charging
- Clean bed & blankets
- Mobile network available
After breakfast, we spent some time exploring the camp area. The ground was very large, so we even played cricket there! It felt amazing playing cricket in the middle of the desert.
We met the staff and owner, had a friendly conversation, and I also gave my company card (MTS Holiday) for future travel business collaboration.
After that, it was time for an adventurous and patriotic journey — Longewala & Tanot Border.
🇮🇳 Journey to Longewala War Memorial
From Sam Sand Dunes / Jaisalmer, Longewala is approximately 120 km, and it takes around 2.5 to 3 hours by road.
While traveling, the scenery was completely different from city life.
We saw:
- Small villages with mud houses
- Very limited facilities
- Domestic animals like goats and camels
- Children coming near tourist vehicles, hoping to receive something
It was emotional to see the simplicity and poverty in some areas. Life here is very basic and dependent on livestock.
we moved further, the landscape became more intense — only desert, thorny bushes (kaantili jhaadi), and endless flat land. Wherever you look — left, right, ahead — only desert.
It was a view I had never seen before in my life.
Longewala War Memorial – History of the 1971 War
We finally reached the historic Longewala War Memorial.
This place is dedicated to the bravery of Indian soldiers during the 1971 Indo-Pak War.
What Happened at Longewala?
In December 1971, during the Indo-Pak war:
- Around 120 Indian soldiers defended the Longewala post
- They were heavily outnumbered by Pakistani forces with tanks
- Indian Air Force fighter jets attacked Pakistani tanks at dawn
- More than 30–40 Pakistani tanks were destroyed
- Indian Army successfully defended the post
It became one of the most famous battles in Indian military history.
Many people know this battle from the Bollywood movie Border.
What You Can See at Longewala
At the memorial, we saw:
- Destroyed Pakistani tanks
- Indian Army tanks
- Fighter aircraft models
- Artillery guns (Toph)
- War information boards
- Photos and stories of brave soldiers
Standing there gave goosebumps. It’s not just a tourist spot — it’s a place of pride and respect.
We clicked photos and shot videos, remembering the bravery of our soldiers.
Tanot Mata Temple – The Miracle Temple
After Longewala, we headed toward Tanot Mata Temple.
Tanot is around 50 km from Longewala.
This temple is managed by the BSF (Border Security Force) and is very famous because of a miracle story.
The 1965 & 1971 War Miracle
During the 1965 Indo-Pak war:
- Pakistan dropped many bombs near the temple
- But none of the bombs exploded
Some of those unexploded bombs are still displayed in the temple museum.
Because of this miracle, Tanot Mata Temple is considered very powerful and sacred by locals and soldiers.
There is no entry fee to visit the temple.
Indo-Pak Border (BP 609) – Permit Process
To visit the nearby Indo-Pak border (BP 609):
- You must obtain a FREE permit
- Issued by BSF at Tanot outpost
- ID proof like Aadhar card required
- You must reach before 3 PM for entry
- After 3 PM, entry closes
No official fee is charged.
20 KM Road to the Border – A Different World
After getting the permit, we drove around 20 km toward the border.
And this road… was unbelievable.
Left side – only desert
Right side – only desert
Ahead – endless flat land
It felt like we had entered another country.
No buildings. No trees. Just open desert land.
After some distance, we started seeing:
- Army tanks
- Military jeeps
- Soldiers
- Border fencing
It felt exactly like scenes from army movies.
Indo-Pak Border Gate Experience
We reached the Indo-Pak Border gate where it is written clearly:
INDO-PAK BORDER
There were many tourists present.
There is a high viewing pole/tower (around 15–20 feet approx.) with steps where you can climb and see across the border area.
From there, you can see:
- Pakistani side land
- Some military camps
- Border fencing
On the Indian side, there are chairs arranged for cultural programs similar to Wagah Border, but the area looked damaged and not active when we visited.
It seemed like no function had been conducted there for a long time.
There are:
- Small shops for snacks
- Parking area available
From this point, 1–2 km further area is highly restricted.
Only people with special government or army reference passes can go beyond that.
Regular tourists cannot go further.
We clicked pictures, recorded videos, and then returned back to Tanot.
India’s Last Village & Desert View
On the Ramgarh Road, after Tanot Temple, there is a desert location marked on Google Maps known as Tanot Desert Area.
Some nearby settlements are called “India’s Last Village.”
People stop here to enjoy open desert views and take photographs.
We also stopped there and enjoyed the silence and beauty of untouched desert land.
Return Journey to Delhi
In the evening around 7 PM, we started our return journey back to Delhi.
Return Route:
Tanot → Ramgarh → Jaisalmer → Pokhran → Jodhpur → Pali → Beawar → Ajmer → Jaipur → Delhi
Night driving in Rajasthan highways was smooth, but we took proper breaks for safety.
Final Thoughts – A Trip of Adventure & Patriotism
This trip was not just about desert fun.
It was about:

- Culture

- And feeling proud at Longewala
